Too late to be forgiven,
the words of the repentant
strewn before you,
by all accounts useless.
The devil pleading sympathy for hubris...
to one entitled to their disbelief.
But hear me out, if nothing else.
Understand, if nothing else,
That
All those times that I spoke down to you
Weren’t about the words.
Every time you turned from me
gave me a second of repose,
time to cool my head,
(space to breathe)
dividing the pain from reality,
You never understood this jester’s game.
‘Twas not to toy with you
or bring you down....
It was a way to control this torpid sadness,
to escape the fury of feeling helpless.
Wit, scathing- sibilant and pure- acidic sarcasm
flowing, reptilian and abhorrent, from the lips of one so sure
So insecure and afraid,
but braving the tears, riding out the storm.
To keep from hurting you so much more,
I said these things hoping you would see the flaws
Of the untrue.
But no-one ever broke the code.
Broken, they recoiled-- disgusted
and thinking they had peeled away the charlatan’s mask.
Thinking they...
Understood.
